![]() It is best to test the placement of the belt by making sure that the platter spins easily by hand before turning the device on. It was easy to set up but the trickiest bit was making sure that the belt was not twisted when it was pulled over the motor pulley. The deck was delivered quickly and it was undamaged and the lid was not scratched. But, I could always send it back if it was no good. I was surprised at how well it performed. This turntable replaces a 1980's model but I have been using turntables since the 1960's. Regarding build quality, I have to mark it down but the price is low and I could not have expected the wood and metal construction that I have been used to in the past. I give it five stars on the basis of good sound quality and ease of use. Do not hesitate as this turntable is very good despite some of its weaknesses. Some others will be contemplating buying LPs and Singles for the first time. ![]() Lots of people, like me, have probably bought this deck to play old records that were stored away. Postscript 05 September 2013: After several months of using this deck I see no reason to change my opinion. There's plenty of good quality Ieads around,Enjoy your records!! There is also a pitch control which was slightly off out of the box, it required a slight adjustment,So, to sum up.if your looking for a decent mid range turntable on a budget, or your just getting back into vinyl records, I don't think you can go far wrong here,Just one point I forgot to mention, the red and white phono lead is very short, if your amp or speakers are not close by, you will need to extend it with another phono lead. I think a happy medium has been struck here, where it really comes into its own is the sound quality, which I can't fault. There is plenty of volume as well, in fact, I was really impressed at how much volume there was, even with my speakers only part way up.I suspect this has a lot to do with the amp &/or speakers your using, but the built in pre amp is really good on this model,I noticed one review which said volume output was poor or not very loud?, not sure what they were using, but certainly isn't the case for me,One thing I did find, was the bass response a bit heavy at times, but simply adjusting the bass on my powered speakers sorted that,Regardless of what so called turntable experts tell you, the Pioneer will not ruin your vinyl collection, the tracking force is set to around 3.5grams, which is well within the recommended settings!,The Pioneer PL-990 may not be the best in terms of build quality, but it's not bad either. There's plenty of rich bass and vocals sound nice and crisp. It has a built in pre amp which sounds great to me, so you will need to use a line in not phono on your amp etc,I have connected mine directly to a pair of pretty chunky powered bookshelf speakers and it sounds great. Recently, I started to collect The Beatles on vinyl from DeAgostini publications and I was so impressed by how the albums looked I decided I wanted to hear them, only problem was, I didn't have a turn table. The truth is, I haven't played records in years, having moved to digital and CDs and I never thought I'd go back over, but I'm pleased to be playing records again and this is where the Pioneer PL - 990 comes into play,I didn't really require anything high end in terms of a turntable, as my plan is only to play records occasionally, so I searched around and knowing/owning Pioneer separates for many years, I choose this deck, really pleased I did,Many audio guru's will probably say these turntable are not great, but the truth is, they are decent quality for the price payed, and their also supplied with a decent quality stylus which you can upgrade if you wish,It's pretty lightweight, but feels pretty decent quality.
